The Ion Air Purifier – The Ins And Outs

Wednesday, April 15th, 2009

here are many types of air purifiers and each has its way of functioning. They employ different methods of clearing the air which differ from the past almost mechanized systems. One of the most popular systems today is the ion air purifier. These work in a different way from how the air filters work, with much better results.

How Does the Ion Air Purifier Work?

Air filters were in the past the only method with which the air purifiers cleared the air. The air needed to pass through these filters which kept away all the bacteria, germs and even pollen particles. However, the filters could not remove all the pollutants from the air such as cigarette smoke, bad odors, and viruses among others.

This prompted research departments into launching studies for finding out other ways and means, whereby the capacity of the air filters can be improved. The next model launched was the ion air purifier. This air purifier works by sending out negative ions into the air which get stuck to whatever pollutants are floating in the air and cause them to get attracted to each other and then land onto things in the house.

Once these pollutant particles fall out of sight on to the furniture, the floor and other surroundings, they are removed from the air altogether. From wherever they fall, a vacuum or manual dusting will rid your house of them. This type of ion air purifier was soon replaced with better ones.

The next ion air purifier functioned in a similar manner, since the basics remain the same. However, instead of letting the pollutant particles fall wherever they please in the house, now they are captured into HEPA or carbon filters. Further filtration of the air (for the smaller particles) is done with the help of electro-magnetized plates which attract the negatively charged pollutant organisms. The filters, in this case, will need to be changed and cleaned at regular intervals of time; a good ion air purifier will need its filters cleaned once in 6-7 months.

The best part of he ion air purifier is not the filtering of the air with utmost ease and efficiency, but the fact that the ionization of the air leads to the formation of some ozone in your home. The smell of ozone makes the house feel out-of-this-world nice. Ensure though the ozone output should not exceed 50 parts/ billion air participles or less.
